First of all, Sunscreen！
It is so necessary in Okinawa!
Well, when it comes to sunscreen, I don’t know much about foreign products, so today, let me only introduce Japanese products.
You might have already noticed, but we often see the indication SPF on sunscreen product. It is an abbreviation for Sun Protection Factor and it indicates a number of how much the product can cut UVB(Ultraviolet B). Suntan, freckling and sunburn are familiar effects of over-exposure to UVB, along with higher risk of skin cancer.
Most people misunderstand about the number indicated along with SPF.
The number actually indicates how long the sunscreen product can extend natural protection during the day.
We need to calculate the following way. For an example, if you naturally start to burn in 20 minutes, the sunscreen will protect you by 30 times that.
30×20min＝600min＝10hours. But if you easily burn say in 10 minutes it will last for 5 hours.
So it’s up to your skin type how long it can last.
I myself actually didn’t know this until recently, so it was good study for me!
Next, about PA. You often see this word on sunscreen product as well as SPF. What does it mean?
PA indicates Protection grade of UVA(紫Ultraviolet A―the cause for suntan)
PA＋→effective for protecting from UVA.
PA＋＋→quite effective for protecting from UVA.
PA＋＋＋→very effective for protecting from UVA.
PA＋＋＋＋→extremely effective for protecting from UVA.
Of course, we might want to choose higher numbers for both SPF and PA. However, please keep in mind, the higher number is, the higher damage or stress for skin. So, you can change the product depending on your situation. If you will go out only a couple of hours, it is better to use a lower SPF product. As for me, I personally love ALLI UV Mineral Moist NEO(spf 50＋PA ＋＋＋＋) from Kanebo.
I use it when I go out all day, or especially for snorkeling because it is waterproof and easy to put on. I also love the smoothness.
